The makings of a shoe greeting card

The last few years, I have designed my own holiday card. You can see one design here. It’s important for me to add my personal touch to everything I do, and rather than buying a box of greeting cards, I opted to design my own.

During the last few weeks. I have been sketching little messy thumbnails in my sketchbook, and compiled a few ideas. After finalizing my thoughts and ideas,  I started to marker render a few of the shoes, and then started to work out the holiday card in photoshop.

I wanted to share my ideation with you. However, at the end of the week, you will see the final  card, so check back then! Cheers!

My fiance mentioned to me that during his trip to NYC, he saw some cute shoe ornaments at the MOMA. So, I thought it would be cool to create my own. I was inspired my some of the ornaments from Crate and Barrel.

Chanel Pre-Fall 12 Paris Bombay

I would have loved to have a seat on this runway. Love the collection inspired by my peeps. I am half Indian so this is so wonderful and inspiring. An amazing take on Indian culture. Enjoy!

Girls’ Boots and Booties

You may know from my previous posts that I have a strong passion for designing kids shoes. My shoe design career started in kids  footwear and it’s just an absolute blast for me to sit down and work out the different possibilities. It’s not as easy as it looks.  I actually find it quite challenging and fun at the same time!

With my consistent shopping, trend research, strong sense to identify and establish trends, I put some sketches together of kids concepts I see relevant in the future. Take a look.

Ankle booties are hot for women’s shoes and I definitely don’t see this trend going away. I love the idea of a modern western style bootie for kids. It has a more rounded toe, but the elements of a western shoe are present. Flowers are a must for girls. I thought it would be cool to do a quilted flower design and add mini flat head studs to give the quilting a more pronounced look. Love this in a suede and/or nubuck.

I fell in love with Miu Miu’s glitter and suede combinations this fall. We have seen the all over glitter explosion for kids in ballets and boots. I think it’s a nice touch to add some glitz but keep it minimal by combining a rich material like suede or nubuck.  I also like the idea of doing a crepe outsole with a zip up bootie. A nice update to the desert boots we have been seeing the past few seasons.

Moccasins are so comfy and playful. Although, I love the fringe, I think it’s great to work on other details to give the same moccasin feeling. Here, I utilized some heavy baseball stitching. I liked the idea of using some hardware subtly but also adding some fun with the feathers. I think the feathers give it a fresh touch!

For the past several seasons, we have seen low profile everywhere. However, I see heavier bottoms inching it’s way back up. Utilitarian looks are always great mixed with feminine details. Girls love fur! So, why not add it where it’s noticeable! Flowers, again, are important but, I wanted the not so obvious flower placement with raw edge, round flowers, and heavy contrast stitching.  Maybe a fun knit lining here would give it more pizazz!!!

Sneaker Girl

Some of you, who’ve known me for a long time, know that deep down inside I’m a sneaker girl. Collectible Nike’s, old school high tops, worn down Chuck Taylor’s, and any rubberized low profile athletic design not worn by the masses, is what I seek out. Yes, I may love wearing my Jimmy Choo’s or girly Miu Miu’s however; I’ll always favor my sneaks because they get me around town quickly and with style.

I’ve been very inspired by Parisian girls wearing a fabulous outfit with not just heels, but also glamorized sneakers. I sketched some sneakers for fun. Here are a few concepts I thought I would share.

Shoe Winter Wish List

The other day my fiance asked me if I had a Christmas list or more like a Shoe list. He knows that there are few things I love getting as gifts and shoes are one of them!!

So, I thought, let me put a little board together for myself. It’s always fun to be focused and inspired by the shoes I love. I know it helps me while I am designing to keep focused on how I can add my signature to whichever client I am designing for. A word of advice to myself and other fellow shoe designers is…You definitely want to consider the brand your working with but adding a little of yourself is a must!

I had no idea how hard it would be to make this list. There are just too many that I like.

LA Feature & Swatch of the Week

A few months ago, I attended the L.A. Textile Show and had the pleasure of meeting talented, surface designer Aaryn Nutter. I knew this girl, with cute style and flair, had a special talent when I walked into her booth, because I could not keep focused when she spoke to me. I was enamored with her prints and thought, “ I really want to design a shoe with one of her prints!”

I am working on SP 13 sketches and will be using one of her beautiful eclectic floral prints on a sandal. I will be posting a sketch soon, so stay tuned! For now, I wanted to give you a swatch from Aaryn’s collection that I love! Read below and get to know Aaryn and see what her favorite shoes are too!

Tell me about your company: Aaryn West is a Los Angeles based design studio specializing in creating original prints a variety of surfaces within fashion, interior and product design. We are constantly developing new artwork to show clients at trade shows and private appointments, and we also offer bespoke services for clients looking to custom develop something more specific.

What inspires you?: My artwork is inspired by both historical and contemporary trends. Textile and ceramic designs date back to our earliest civilizations, and over time each culture has developed such a rich, distinct style.. and I’ve always been a huge fan of indigenous designs from all over the world, as well as what we would call ‘vintage’ from the last century. But I’m also really inspired by digital media, and all of the potential that digital printing has to offer. When you combine those two worlds you end up with something truly unique, but still relevant.

 Who are some of your favorite designers?: This is a tough question because there are so many!  I should say I can be a fair-weather follower, depending on a designer’s use of graphics.. Prints are huge in fashion right now, so there is no shortage of favorites.. including Etro, Mara Hoffman, Erdem and Jonathan Saunders to name a few.. .but if they decide to change to minimalism tomorrow, I can say my answer will also likely change… I’m crossing my fingers that doesn’t happen.

Why a surface designer and not a fashion designer, graphics designer, etc?: I’ve never been interested in fashion per se, I’ve always been more of a jeans-and-tee kind of girl. I actually went to college for graphic design, and only got involved in fashion after graduating, when one of my best friends suggested I check the fashion trade publications for job listings. After a few years of designing tee shirt graphics, I discovered that textiles and all-over prints were my true passion. There were plenty of manufacturers here in Los Angeles whom I could work for, but I couldn’t seem to find any independent print studios. That’s why, in 2010, I decided to start my own. And now that I’m doing prints full-time, I see the endless potential for applications! From crib sheets to runway fashion, prints are literally everywhere these days… with new surfaces popping up every year, like laptop skins, and wall decals. It’s definitely a good time to be a surface designer.

What’s your dream shoe that you want in your closet right now? I’d say these (see above too) would be the pair I would add to my closet if  I could right now…  it’s funny because my company’s tag line starts with “we dream of tie-dye sneakers”, so when I found these I nearly flipped out. I could send you a zillion pairs of crazy heels that I love, but I’m much more likely to wear these  platforms.

‘All things girly’ mood board

While I am working, I collect images that inspire me. Right now, I love all things that are girly. Whether it be cotton candy, fur,  or my favorite Miu Miu glitter pumps or any glitter shoe for that matter, I really love things that make me feel young and playful. It’s also fun to put images together because it allows me to reflect where I am at in that moment. How are you feeling today? What’s your mood?

Chronicles of Styles of Design . . .

In 2009 I was approached by Aneta Genova, an accomplished accessories designer, writer, and fashion instructor at Parsons, to submit sketches and illustrations for an accessory design book she was working on. I was very honored and excited, and looked forward to my sketches hopefully making the final cut.  With the passage of time I had wondered, lost touch with Aneta and forgotten.

 Recently, I received an email from Aneta letting me know that her book “Accessory Design has finally been published and yes, my sketches were in her book! I was ecstatic and could not wait to receive the book to see the final product. I am enclosing some pictures of the book and sharing some of my works you might find interesting.  If you’re interested in learning about accessory design, illustration techniques and reading about different styles and processes from start to finish, I would definitely consider buying Aneta’s book. It’s a beautifully done book for the believers!

While living in Spain, I was working on my portfolio and looking for some inspiration. A friend of mine came by with a few books and one that caught my eye was of a female photographer that chronicled personal photos of her escapades. I was so inspired by the fact that the pics were taken by a digital camera and that they were beautifully done. In almost every photo of her, she had her hair in a braid, and I thought about finding different ways to utilize braids in my shoe designs. So here are the sketches I came up with.

More braid inspirations. When I sketch, I try to explore different possibilities. For example; in the above gray shoe, you will observe the braided heel but immediately to the right of it, you will see no heel braid but with a similar upper. I like to view and examine different options.

At the time, I had cut my hair short and always wore blazers and jeans. I thought it would be cool to draw a girl inspired by the things I liked at the time; ripped jeans, blazers, and booties. These booties were inspired by a sofa. You can see the thought process here.

I heart shoe!

Boy, has this week been crazy. It’s been about two weeks since I have had a moment to blog. I have so much to share with you! Stay tuned for a few posts this week!

Part of working for yourself  is handling general business tasks to keep business up and running successfully. This may include bookkeeping, marketing, etc. Something I am working on right now are ideas for holiday cards and client/colleague holiday gifts. I love the holidays and sending a token of gratitude is very satisfying, fun, and creative!

I found these cool wooden hearts on a blog I really enjoy called Design Love Fest.  I thought it would be cute to emboss a shoe on the heart. I was playing around with photoshop and this is what I came up with. It’s not the holiday gifts I will be actually sending but it’s fun to play around with different ideas and possibilities.
